Pump Six and Other StoriesO assholery Here is the Plastic Detritus Of A Back detritus of a back there a starving but plucky Soul With Something To ProveWell with something to proveWell but dark Bleak Overwhelmingly bleak To the point where it sucks out all the happiness out of you leaving you hollow and unsettledMemorable To the point where it feels as if it s crawling under your skin to stay with you for a very long timeIf you have read The Windup Girl the worlds that Bacigalupi creates in this collection of short stories the themes the mood the settings will be uite familiar to you Two of the stories here actually are set in the same world as that novel and one of them is a direct preuel to itAlmost all the stories in this collection are set in the future dystopian world which appears to be an incredibly bleak and grim place to xperience And they all appear connected by one common thread the theme of DEFICIT be that of foodcalories or water or power or children or knowledge or compassion and understanding Ecological destruction and devastation the direct result of the treatment of nature by our species that is supposedly at the top of Wild Wicked Scot (Highland Grooms, evolutionary chain in another motif running through most of the stories Lisa was a good swimmer She flashed through the ocean s metallic sheen like anel out of history and when she surfaced her naked body glistened with hundreds of iridescent petroleum jewels When the Sun started to set Jaak lit the ocean on fire with his 101 We all sat and watched as the Sun s great red ball sank through veils of smoke its light shading deeper crimson with Black on Blonde every minute Waves rushed flaming onto the beach I would hate tover be trapped in the world of Paolo Bacigalupi s imagination It is intense and grim and bleak and full of you did not just go there moments He does not hesitate to immerse the reader into the aspects of life that are dark and dirty and filthy and repulsive and disgusting and repelling and disturbing Even seemingly hopeful The Walters Art Museum the Art of Ancient Greece endings on a closer inspection turn out to be just distractions and actually the hopelessness remains there and is in no danger of going anywhere Hopelessness and bleakness are why I was glad that the short stories format provided natural breaks because this book was not the one to be consumed in one reading binge No I needed some time in betweenach story to recover binge No I needed some time in between American Nietzsche each story to recover bit tonjoy our world that appears Art, Culture, and Cuisine exhilaratingly beautiful next to the worlds that Bacigalupi s merciless imagination createsAll of these stories serve as a warning about what can happen if humanity continues on its present course of disregard for nature in the chase for profits the worship of power the attitude of survival of the fittest the belief thatverything Berlioz and His Century exists to serve our whims Unlike so many other dystopian worlds this one feels intimately rooted in our present seems like uite a probable future to our present and that is what makes it so bleakly grim and depressingly sadWhat I love about Bacigalupi s storytelling is his ability toasily integrate the Aristotles Rhetoric elements of his dystopian world into the story without resorting to the sections of info dumping And another great thing is that he does not talk down to his readers that he trusts their ability to understand the story withoutxcessive hand holding And I love thatThe stories in this collection that resonated the most with me were Pump Six view spoilerthe story about the society in the not so remote future that suffers from Blood Runs Green ever declining intelligence and finds itself lacking the people who can fix what is breaking down hide spoile. Ble andnvironmental advocacy lie at the center of Bacigalupi’s work Each of the stories herein is at once a warning and a celebration of the tragic comedy of the human xperien.

Topian literature isn t usually my thing but Paolo Bacigalupi s stories make great reading due to their superior construction moody immersive atmospheres tantalizingly Paolo Bacigalupi s stories make great reading due to their superior construction moody immersive atmospheres tantalizingly ideas and sometimes subtle warnings Everything Paolo Bacigalupi writes goes on my TBR list This is a collection of short sci fi stories with most of them set in near future dystopia The stories are very good but depressing I mean 1984 type depressing What really got me when I read this book is that none of the future possibilities described are not unlikely to happen just like 1984 which I already mentioned In fact I would recommend reading this book to people just to see the possible directions we are happily going in I also found last several stories to be very disturbing in addition to be depressingBy the middle of the book I was sure it deserves 5 star rating The author s imagination is really good and allows him to create interesting believable worlds Why 4 stars than Because several of the stories are written in simple present tense which I think is painful to read and there were no justification to its use in these particular cases simple past tense used since the dawn of time for storytelling would work just fine In the conclusion if you have any interest in sci fi read this book if you have any interest in dystopia read this book if you are curious about the possible ways our society might develop read this book just to be aware of the possibilities This collection of short stories paints a very bleak picture of the future that I found uite disturbing This is without doubt the darkest book I ve ver read At first I was finding these stories so depressing and uncomfortable that I tried to take a break from them I found that I couldn t Perhaps they suit my current mood but I felt that once I had a taste of this depth I couldn t stay away I didn t love Colored Property every story inual measure but ach one sent a shock up my spine and gave an insight into humanity I haven t been
