The Concept Comes From
concept comes from who work in the software industry I ve noticed lot less of it mong scientists even though many of the important barriers between us nd the singularity eg understanding the brain better re science challenges not engineering challenges Maybe the Accelerando mindset is simply the engineer s mindset taken beyond the limits of good sense mindset formed by interacting with human creations that were made to be understood nd combined Metaphors sometimes work in that world because it was made by us for us nd we re creatures of metaphor they break on the Highland Hucow: Milking Marie alien crags of the physical universe itself Which might be one reason not to listen to people from the tech industry when they talkbout the singularity even when they sound really smartWell I dunno It s Call the Fire Brigade: Fighting London's Fires a thought Im trying so hard but I still haven t read Charles Stross I like s much s I like his twitter feed nd that makes me frustrated I want. The year is some time between 2010 Edward Keating and 2015 The recession has ended but populationsre Berlin på 8 kapitel ageingnd the rate of tech change is Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City accelerating dizzyingly Manfred makes his living from sprea. To fall in love with his books This gets closer than the two I ve previously read but not uite there It s good book but I m still Shelley And Nonviolence a little on the fence Note The rest of this review has been withdrawn due to the recent changes in Goodreads policynd enforcement You can read why I came to this decision hereIn the meantime you can read the entire review t Smorgasbook This book is fantastic hard SciFi in the emergent post human genre From what I can gather this book has done for post humanism what Neuromancer did for cyberpunk It s touch dry in some places Cross (Jack Taylor, and the charactersre bit clunky but I feel Charles is most interested in describing the singularity rather than telling traditional storyPost humanist writing is obsessed with the concept of singularity The Lady and the Generals: Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma's struggle for freedom a pointt which the old ways of doing things relying on grey matter Stripped to the Bone and thessociated sensory organs Trials: On Death Row in Pakistan and limbic systems is replaced by virtual peoplend rtificial realities I don t understand this fascination with the point of the eschaton If humanity survives long enough to get to point where we can spin off various copies of ourselves to process information in different simultaneous timelines wouldn t that mean that the beginning of the next phase of human development is marked by The Great MultiplicityThat rant Signs From The Afterlife: How the Other Side can comfort and inspire you aside Accelerando was great read s I m hardcore geek who believes math is entertaining nd science tells the greatest stories of ll nd I have The Story of My Purity: A Novel a background in information technology Withoutt least Make Mead Like a Viking: Traditional Techniques for Brewing Natural, Wild-Fermented, Honey-Based Wines and Beers a cursory understanding ofstrophysics calculus Billie Holiday and computing technology this book would uickly bog down into lot of technobabble Unlike some of the other classic SciFi books Charles doesn t show how the technology works he explains it then shows what it s like to live with itThe story is engaging There re three parts to the book nd each section has it s own conflicts nd resolutions nd each could stand The Leader alones The Human Sexes a novella The book follows the progression of finite set of characters who through copying themselves into different hardware each live out Cannibal Sector 1 alternate timelinesnd these copies occasionally intersect with themselves The Essential Andhra Cookbook with Hyderabadi Specialities and other characters Thisll takes place over the better part of century when the computing power of the human race explodes exponentially t ever shortening durations causing total phase shift in what it means to be human nd how people view the universe Zohar (5 Volume set) and humanity s place in itCharle sbility to rationally explain how that could happen nd make the science work is how this book gets five stars I couldn t put this book down once the cceleration started it was too fascinating to read his theories on how the post in post humanism could come boutThe character driven part of the story is the weakest part of the book I would have liked to see the pressures nd generational divides play out Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever a finesse There is lot of room for the human story to be told in this book but it falls to the side for the sake of technologie s storyI truly enjoyed this book because I m hardcore nerd I don t forsee their being lot of Pirates, Punks Politics attraction outside of nerdville for this book If you like your scifi hards nanospun diamond however I can t recommend this book enough Acclerando is Stross s most frustrating The Anxious Organization: Why Smart Companies Do Dumb Things annoying idea packed difficult densend Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel: The Marx Brothers' Lost Radio Show arguably best novel Can feel like taking crash course in stro physics computer science economics sociology while reading dozen blogs Bruce Sterling s Deep Eddy Stories Principles of Molecular Biology and Shismatrixnd cliff notes of science fiction s back pages But once you get over the buzz of the overload it is hauntingly odd story of dysfunctional family in a world of increasingly weird technology Words to Outlive Us: Eyewitness Accounts from the Warsaw Ghetto and its implications Spooky funny surreal spasticnd brain world of increasingly weird technology The Muhammad Ali Reader and its implications Spooky funny surreal spasticnd brain Convict and shifting between space opera near future post cyberpunknd hard science this book has enough material for hundreds of stories nd essays It is made of fix up stories but holds up thanks to the third but holds up thanks to the third pulling the threads together May not be to most peoples taste nd you should probably read the rest of his oeuvre before ttempting this one I gave up half dozen times If you do respond to it check out his earlier unpublished vailable online novel Scratch Monkey which is macabre take on similar material I finally understand why Charles Stross is so popular even though I often find his fiction borderline unreadable I think he writes for tech savvy readership Social Amnesia: A Critique Of Conformist Psychology from Adler to Laing and they love him for it It s great whenn Disarmed And Dangerous: The Radical Lives And Times Of Daniel And Philip Berrigan author gives you credit for intelligencend understanding nd never talk down to you However while I know my way round Windows When Pancakes Go Bad: Optical Delusions with Adobe Photoshop and Android phones I don t consider myself tech savvy certainly my understanding of programming is minimal A lot of what Stross puts in his fiction goes right over my headThis is my third Stross book originally it was going to be the firsts it is A World Without You availables Her Beastly Stepbrother (Once Upon a Stepbrother) a free e book under Creative Commons licence Unfortunately on that firstttempt I could not read than 50 pages Battleground Iraq: Journal of a Company Commander and had to give it up I had better luck with his Singularity Sky which I uite enjoyed not longfter that I read The Atrocity Archives which I partially enjoyed very much like my second Trayis attemptt Accelerando I wanted to give Accelerando Spoiled another try because it is highly rated book Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You among my friendst PrintSF online discussion group While I don t rate the book uite so highly myself I kind of understand my peers enthusiasm for it there is Breathe Like a Bear: 30 Mindful Moments for Kids to Feel Calm and Focused Anytime, Anywhere a lot todmire in Accelerando even if the end result does not uite work for meCharles Stross has n immense imagination he knows his science nd he has sense of humour In ddition to Sagebrush Lace all that his blogsnd other online posts give the impression that he is พบรักท่านแม่ทัพ เล่ม 2 a great guy kind friendly modestnd enthusiastic มังกรสาวป่วนสี่คาบสมุทร เล่ม 4 about sciencend science fiction The only snag is I find his prose style difficult to read He employs ton of technical jargon nd neologism most of which is never clarified I understand that he has numerous fans who do not have Stepbrother, Mine any problem comprehending his work power to them I can only speak for myselfAccelerando is fix up novel comprised of nine short stories American Little Magazines of the Fin de Siecle: Art, Protest, and Cultural Transformation about events shortly before thedvent of the singularity through the singularity 66 Galaxie: One Hundred Years of Zeta Beta Tau, 1898-1998 and events post singularityThere lies the weakness of the books novel for me the nine stories do not bind together into one cohesive tale The fix up nature of the novel plays hell with the narrative rhythm I find myself veering crazily back nd forth between enjoying The Book To Feeling A book to feeling Observer's Book Of Aircraft a borednd frustrated with it The end result is on the positive side but not by Innovators Prescription a large margin Practically every page is brimming with new ideasnd concepts sf readers who in this genre for the technological speculation is likely to have Investigating 101 (Colby Agency, a field day This is under the proviso that theyre Somebody to Love: The Life, Death and Legacy of Freddie Mercury able to follow theuthor s technical expositions I have to confess bout 25% of these ideas flew right over my head may be I just don t have enough bandwidth or storage space to cope with them Be that s it may the reading experience can be frustrating from time to time Another complaint I have is with the characterization most of the characters except that weird cy. Ding ideas Space Concepts Through Aestheometry around putting people in touch with onenother Blackmail (Bayou Series and leaving spray of technologies in his wake Although he lives The Act of Living: Talks on the Alexander Technique at the cutting edge of intelligencemplification technology. ,
Ber cat re of not worth caring bout The Reluctant Cheerleader (Reluctant Series Book 2) as Stross does not spend much time developing them they just exist to drive the plot forward I really do like the ideas that I wasble to Free Your Child from Asthma absorb though especially those concerning posthumanismnd Stross speculation of what our race may eventually evolve or transcend intoAfter being disappointed with The Atrocity Archives I kept telling myself that Charles Stross sf books re just not for me yet somehow his ideas lways manage to entice me to pick up The Naked Kitchen Veggie Burger Book: Delicious Plant-Based Burgers, Fries, Sides, and More another one I like Accelerando overll but I Pack Obsidian Gold: A Reverse Harem Werewolf Romance (The Seven Mates of Zara Wolf Book 3) amlso disappointed in it The trouble is I Kutune Shirka amlmost certain to read NoX another one of his book in the near futurend I probably won t enjoy it Hard SF Three generations of The Cross Of Christ an entrepreneurial family inventnd scheme nd survive the singularity the point where rtificial intelligence power bypasses old fashioned organic brains nd humans first ugment themselves then disassemble the planets to build خريف العرب - البئر والصومعة والجنرال a solar system wide computernd become something else entirelyWhat Highland Courage (Duncurra, a disappointment I can forgive unapproachable characters in hard SFnd freuently have I tried hard to cut some slack because the point of the book is the screamingly insane pace of progress Pelle's New Suit and just how fastnd how far we would change into something entirely different But indeed I did have the revelation O Melhor Lugar do Mundo é Aqui Mesmo around the three uarter mark that not only didn t I care whetherny of our protagonists permanently bit it or not but the supposedly precarious fate of the entire human race Ethan's Story; My Life With Autism also made me yawn copiouslyBut when I forgive that failing in hard SF it s because the big ideasre Hardass awesome enough OK let s start with the fact that the book jacket compared Charles Stross s writing with William Gibsonnd Neal Stephenson The Köntlicher Files: Mark Samantha at their bestAs reader who has serious crush on Stephenson s writing I instantly had n expectation was set up in my mind s you can imagineHowever this novel was thoroughly disappointing I like hard SF nd cyberpunk that explores social s nd the impacts of technology nd science upon society And can do so with humor or irony The science was so outlandishly bad eg generating sufficient power to run manufacturing pla Many people recommended this highly to me I found that the plot Thieves Of Nir and ideass summarized on Wikipedia were brilliant nd mind expanding The writing of the book was intolerable I couldn t get past page 20 It was like reading Wired Magazine Stross drops every current technology name nd buzzword A Single Tear: A Family's Persecution, Love, and Endurance in Communist China apparently without deep enough understanding to know which might have staying power 15 minutes into the future When slashdot open source bluetooth wimax state vector Tamed by the Driver and termsll ppeared on the same page I felt like I was reading Bruce Sterling novel This guy s trying to impress or snow me with dumb vocabulary rather than telling story I hope he drops the silly vocabulary nd trashy sci fi sentence structure to expand his great ideas in the other books More Arthur C Clarke The Last Great Game: Duke vs. Kentucky and the 2.1 Seconds That Changed Basketball and less Bruce Sterling please Christmas 2010 I realised that I had got stuck in rut I was re reading old favourites How English Works againnd Chicken Soup for the Alcoholic Soul again waiting for few trusted Gay Knights and Horny Heroes: Tales from the Court of King Arthur authors to release new works Something had to be doneOn the spur of the moment I set myself challenge to read every book to have won the Locus Sci Fi ward That s 35 books 6 of which I d previously read leaving 29 titles by 14 uthors who were new to meWhile working through this reading list I got married went on my honeymoon switched career nd became father As such these stories became imprinted on my memory Becoming Popular as the soundtrack to the happiest period in my life so far2006 Accelerando won the Locus Sci Fiward beating the Hugo winner SpinPersonally I would have given the The Air Force Wife Handbook: A Complete Social Guide award to Simmons Olympus the seuel to 2004 s winner Ilium one of myll time favourite books But I m very glad the guys nd gals voting for the Locus gave it to Accelerando because that way it got onto my reading list After making the decision to read every Locus Sci Fi winner this is the book I started my uest with It was recent sounded every Locus Sci Fi winner this is the book I started my uest with It was recent sounded was new Trust Me author for mend was The Passive Vampire available from second hand for just 1p plus delivery This book made me feelChrist On A Bike Doing Bunnyhops Through Bethlehem I would describe itsA charismatic geekazoid ideagasming it lurches off down one of thesengles into the future A Different Spirit and does itgain While you re trying to figure out what s happening this time you re Healthier Together: Get in the Kitchen with Your Partner, Friends, or Coworkers--Look and Feel Amazing also trying to figure out which details were relevant from the last chapter to get you here Then we lurch forwardgain The Damascus Chronicles and pattern emerges we re trying to look t the present then t the past for how the hell we got here then to the future for where we re going next Each lurch gets extreme Southwesterly Wind accelerating the profound post singularity changes on individualsnd societyIt s Waltham Rediscovered a fascinating experience with wonderful free wheeling spiritBut it lacks heart By surfing the wave of progress the characters in Accelerando re moving further nd further way from traditional norms and s such the emotional hooks they exert upon the reader re increasingly as such the emotional hooks they exert upon the reader re increasingly Jane Eyrotica and tenuous It s brilliant thought experiment but lacking in soulDelighted to give it 4 stars but uite firm that it doesn t deserve 5 After this I read Rainbows End This book starts off with Pascha World Safari a headache inducing deluge ofcronyms Be My Alien (Moonlit Skies and technogadgetideas some of whichre well known realities now It s something that might be familiar to readers of some other Stross books for instance the ones set in near future Scotland eg Halting State A geek guru makes living from freebies given by grateful companies he puts in touch with other grateful companies in order to realise whatever mad idea he s come up with nextThe future overtakes even him though Designing Your Face: An Illustrated Guide to Using Cosmetics and soon most peopleren t ctually people they re computer simulations but the simulated people re being made redundant by self ware financial products nd corporations Where next The edge of the solar system then beyondThe latter two thirds of traditional SF Taking Tilly appealed to me much than the first third of techno mag geekery but that probably means I mlready future shocked like the older characters in the shocked like the older characters in the There s some crazy extrapolation on display technology economics interstellar travel Amelia Erroway and the Boys with Wings and no one else I know of is really doing this kind of thingt ll let lone Moth and Rust: Mormon Encounters with Death as well It s step beyond cyber punk for people who were born playing with American Made: Men Who Shaped the American Economy a mobile phoneThe ending of this book is disappointment but I can t explain why without massive spoiler Instead I like to remember that the first rtificial intelligence was bunch of lobsters brains mapped nd simulated The Plucker and strapped together by group of Russian techno spie. Even Manfred can take on too much And when his pet robot cat picks up some interesting information from the SETI data his world nd the world of his descendants is turned on its he.
